An unvented hot water cylinder gives you strong, consistent hot water at every tap and shower in the house. That mains pressure is what makes it better than a vented system. But it also means the temperature and pressure relief valves, the expansion vessel and the tundish connection all need to be working perfectly. If they are not, you have a serious safety issue.
The manufacturer says service it every year. Most insurance policies say the same. Our engineers are G3 qualified, which is the industry certification for working on unvented systems under the Building Regulations. Not all plumbers have this.
During a service we inspect every safety component. We test the T and P valves, check the expansion vessel pressure, clean the line strainer, confirm the incoming water pressure is correct and give you a service sticker and written record.

Every year. The manufacturer requires it for the warranty and your insurer probably does too. Unvented cylinders hold hot water under pressure. The safety mechanisms need regular testing.
Part G3 of the Building Regulations covers unvented hot water systems. Engineers working on these cylinders need a specific G3 qualification. All our cylinder engineers have it.
Usually limescale on the immersion heater element. The scale builds up and causes the water around the element to overheat and pop. Descaling or replacing the element fixes it.
A vented cylinder gets fed by a cold water tank in the loft. Low pressure. An unvented cylinder connects straight to the mains. Much stronger flow at taps and showers. The unvented type is better but needs more maintenance.
Almost certainly yes. Check the paperwork that came with your cylinder. Most manufacturers require proof of annual servicing to honour the warranty.
